Abstract

Biodiversity is the basis of people's material livelihoods and the source of various ecological goods and services. For hundreds of years, Mexico's indigenous peoples have developed an intimate cultural relationship with nature, as evidenced by the diverse cultural manifestations that make up Mexico's multi-ethnic mosaic. The future of any of these communities and their local economies is directly linked to the sustainable use of biological resources. With regard to the latter, the use of species as fuel remains an important resource for domestic and work needs mainly. Thus, the diversity of species used as fuel in rural and semi-rural communities depends on their cultural identity and the natural environment in which they are found. The importance of compiling the information available for this type of use is recognized, and thus have the necessary bases to propose management and conservation strategies for the species subject to extraction for these purposes. For this reason, as part of the project Information System of the Uses and Management of Mexican Biodiversity, developed in the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity, the information reported was systematized in 525 publications (thesis, articles, books, fascicles, etc.) on the fuel use of vascular plants. A total of 1,285 species and hybrids are presented with this type of use, as well as their common names, the part used or form of use, the registered risk categories (in accordance to Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Floral, NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2018, International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List), and their origin (wide distribution, endemic or introduced).
