Abstract

Residents and those dependent on the environment have deep, empirical knowledge about the ecosystems in which they live. By integrating this knowledge with scientific analyses, it is possible to improve the understanding of ecosystem services, develop culturally appropriate policies, and foster social participation. Mangroves in the state of Piauí are affected by human actions, harming the environment and the people who depend on it. The objective of this study was to understand the damages and ecosystem services perceived by residents of the mangroves of Piauí. We used a combination of methods to complement the ecosystem services identified in the academic literature with those perceived by the local population. Ecosystem services were grouped into categories. Data were evaluated by the Loyalty Level (LL) and Likert scale to determine which services were considered most important. 25 types of services are recognized. Cultural Services and Provisioning stood out, with priority given to cultural services. This demonstrates that local people have a symbolic relationship with mangroves and associate damage to meat farming. These findings suggest that the sociocultural dimension of mangroves should be considered by decision-makers as an indispensable criterion for addressing the main challenges in the conservation of coastal ecosystems.
