Abstract

The family Labiatae is one of the most diverse families in Chiapas. The information about its uses in folk medicine is scarce, however, and until now there have no been efforts to compile and systematize the information regarding its importance in industry and medicine. Based on herbarium information the species diversity and uses in folk medicine in Chiapas were determined. The herbarium material had poor ethnobotanical information. Fifty species belonging to 17 genera were found to be useful in folk medicine. The uses of Labiatae were closely associated to the treatment of gastrointestinal and respiratory ailments.
